I have a tendency to err on the side of “laser focus,” and sometimes neglect basic needs such as hydration, eating, and taking breaks. Being aware of that, I am actively trying to change this pattern! One thing that’s been helping me to stay hydrated at least is having delicious go-to beverages like this hibiscus tea recipe at the ready to enjoy during my intense work sessions.

So let’s talk about beverages…

In short, they are not all created equal.  Not only that, but remember that what you drink is as important as what you eat.

Soda = Empty Calories + Zero Nutrition

We must to choose the liquids we consume with great care.

Beverage companies spend billions of dollars each year on advertising to get us to consume their addictive, unhealthy “liquid candy” all day long, which is contributing to the unprecedented obesity epidemic we are currently facing. Consumption of these sweet drinks is detrimental to health, no matter what “industry funded science” says. They are loaded with empty calories, and are thus not providing us with any nutrition, keeping us unsatiated and hungry. Yet a lot of people still consume them regularly, jeopardizing their health in the process.

Making Better Choices

I have been on a quest to find the most health-promoting beverages in order to share them with my family, friends, and clients. I like to call these powerful beverages elixirs, as a reference to ancient alchemists elixir vitae (i.e elixir of life). These beverages provide an easy and delicious swap for other nutrient-void drinks, and will help you to finally kick the habit of sugary soda pops.

My favorite of these health-promoting beverages? My zingy ruby elixir recipe, aka good ol’ hibiscus tea, but souped up a bit! Since discovering hibiscus tea a year ago, it has become one of my favorite beverages.

Why Drink Hibiscus?

Hibiscus tea, also known as bissap, sour tea, or agua de Jamaica, is one of the absolute best beverages one can consume. Here’s why — it is loaded with antioxidants. It is so powerful, that it can be as effective as one of the top blood pressure lowering drugs on the market, and yet, without any of the side effects. Amazing!

Today, I am sharing my go-to recipe with you.

I recommend drinking up to 1L a day, and using a reusable straw to reduce exposure of your teeth to acidity. This is powerful stuff.

Iced Hibiscus Ruby Elixir

Serves: 1


  • 1L distilled or pure filtered water
  • 1 lemon
  • 2 dates
  • 3 tbsp of dried hibiscus flowers
  • Ice cubes

Alternatives & Boosters

  • Couple slices of lemon or lime
  • 2 mint leaves
  • Couple drops of pure vanilla extract
  • A dash of cinnamon


  1. Poor water in 1L glass bottle.
  2. Add hibiscus flowers.
  3. Let it infuse for at least 1h, though overnight is best.
  4. Strain infusion into blender, and add dates.
  5. Juice lemon, and pour fresh yield into blender.
  6. Add boosters, mint, vanilla and/or cinnamon.
  7. Blend for a few seconds at high speed, until it’s a bit frothy (and delicious!)
  8. Serve in jar or glass over ice, add lemon or lime slices if you wish, and enjoy with that reusable straw I mentioned.

* Please note that if you don’t have a blender, you can still make this drink! Just maybe swap out the dates for a dab of maple syrup, or… drink it straight up.
